Hi! I’m Leah and I’m a Physiotherapy student studying at the University of Huddersfield. Here is an insight to my experience of living at DIGS Storthes Hall Park in Huddersfield as a first-year student!
How did you find moving in?
The idea of moving to university was nerve-wracking and exciting… but when I arrived, it really exceeded my expectations! The location of my student accommodation, DIGS Storthes Hall Park is beautiful and is surrounded by gorgeous scenery. It really gave a sense of homeliness and made me feel a lot calmer. When moving into Storthes, there was plenty of staff around to direct me and guide me through the process of moving in, along with the block reps showing me the way round the site. This made the transition from moving away from my home so much easier.
Was it easy to make friends?
I bonded instantly with my flat mates and quickly came to realize that I was not the only nervous student! I had found a couple of them on a Freshers page that was set up on Facebook by DIGS, which gave us chance to bond before moving in. As for those who I hadn’t gotten the chance to contact, I feel like it was a bit awkward at first, but once we got past that initial barrier of worry, it was very easy to create conversation, especially when we were all excited about the partying together!
What events were available for Freshers?
There were many events including a welcome party, a silent disco, and a foam party (my personal favourite!) It was a great opportunity to make new friends and spend time bonding with flat mates. I was very nervous moving away from home, but everyone is in the same boat, and I didn’t realize that until the Freshers Welcome Party on the first night. Storthes holds many free events at the Venue, not only during Freshers week, but throughout the year! All the Freshers parties were free entry, which meant a lot of students jumped at the opportunity to go to as many as they could, including myself! There are regular quizzes, and many prizes to be won. There are also a range of societies to join, such as football or band, which is another great way to meet new people!
How are the staff?
The staff at Storthes are very welcoming and helpful, and there is always someone there whenever you need help or advice! There is always someone in reception, and 24-hour security to make sure the site is a safe place for us. The staff are always happy to answer any queries you may have when moving in, and really helped me when I had any issues or worries, so don’t be afraid to ask if you need help!
What advice would you give to first-year students moving away from home?
The best advice I could give to a new first year moving away from home for the first time would to just be yourself, and don’t hold back from getting to know lots of new people! Moving away from home can be scary, but just know you’re not alone.
